6. Representations of the Family Archetype

The family archetype is found in every epoch and in every culture. In the western world, it also finds its manifestation in one of the most frequent images of Christian iconography, the Holy Family, and in the trinitarian representation of the divinity, which is the image that structures the whole of Christian theology. Whereas in the Holy Family we find a triad of mother, father and child (Mary, Joseph and Jesus), the Trinity is composed of Father, Son and Holy Ghost, which in Old Testament iconography often appears as female Wisdom (Shekhinah). In his comments on the dogma of the Trinity, which he saw as an expression of the Self, Jung (1942-1948) underscores the correlation between Mary and the Holy Ghost, whom the Gnostics saw as a mother.

The importance of the image of the Madonna, especially for Catholics, lies in more than revealing the importance of the female-maternal in a religious culture dominated by male aspects; more than anything else, it reveals the psychic need for the representation of a supernatural family triad that expresses the transpersonal aspect of the family model.
